Northeast Dakota Photography

About / Dakota Gilbert

I photograph the moments worth waiting for.

Hi! My name is Dakota Gilbert. I began taking photos in high school, starting off with little impromptu photoshoots with friends of mine, mostly around the Capital District of New York. Eventually I started dabbling in concert photography as I became more comfortable with a camera.

It wasn’t until my second year of college up at SUNY Plattsburgh that I decided to try Sports Photography — and it immediately became my passion. Over the next three years I covered every game I could, racking up 136 games across every sport at the university, shooting directly for Plattsburgh State’s Athletics Department, including headshots, team photos, and media days my senior year.

Beyond that I declared a Minor in Photography and was a Teaching Assistant for three different courses. While Sports Photography is my number one passion, Concert Photography is a very close second — I’ve regularly photographed concerts as a contributor for Nippertown since 2019.

I find both to be very similar: they’re observational. Neither athletes nor musicians are focused on the camera. It’s up to the photographer to scan the environment, figure out where to go, and wait for the moment everything may align.
